Ok now a few folks have asked about starting up in Infinity so I thought I'd give it a shot at developing a guide.

I'm going to try and get an article up a week up on here covering an aspect of the game from starting force building into basic tactics, effective troop combinations and other stuff.....

It’s my first time writing an article like this so bear with me and all feedback is welcome.
Dickie 8-)

Part 1: Getting boots on the table!

The best way I discovered to start with infinity is to forget rules, dice, templates, counters and other things and just look at the models. They are in my opinion some of the best miniatures out there at the moment.
So I decided to put down on screen my thoughts on how an army / force or team whatever you want to call it can be started effectively without putting you out of pocket.

So here are the essential items you’ll need to start playing infinity with:
A print out or a copy of the quick start rules pack.
Some bases either as counters or cut out counters printed /stuck to card.
Four D20 dice (the highest amount used in the game at the moment is five)
A tape measure
A cheap laser pointer (it’s all about line of sight model to model this will save arguments, guessing and most of all time!)

Ok so we’ve now got the basics let’s talk about the ways to make up a unit/force then.

Part 1: The ‘starter’ boxed forces
This is my preferred approach also my suggested approach to those new to infinity because mainly as you get a good solid mix of units usually 3 basic infantry, 1 specialist, 1 veteran and 1 heavy / medium infantry. Usually they have a good balanced content and range between 125 to 175 points depending on the faction/sectorial force you choose.

These boxes are a good balance and usually have a mix of trooper profiles and abilities that are good to learn the basic skills of the game from such as how camouflage and thermo-optic (TO) camouflage works for example…Yeah think predator like camouflage troops running around!
Also they are value for money as they usually weigh in no more than £30 per box plus if you’re new to infinity (or the war gaming scene generally) the boxes have a few basic tokens on relating to the force inside as well as doubling as a small carry case for the miniatures post build as the box the parts arrive in is padded!

After a few games then you should have grip of the basics…time to draw in fresh recruits. Now I expanded on my starter box force by adding things I liked the look of, so I invested in a sniper and another strong assault character and then another 2 infantry models allowing me to reach my 264 or ‘300’ point list. But you could also see where your force is weak and tactically apply those important troops to ensure your forces victory against the enemy such as snipers and engineers, combat specialists, medics etc.

Part 2: Going your own way.
Ok so that was the ‘easy’ way of picking out a force and getting a progression from a starter box to full fighting unit. So now we come to an easy yet more chaotic way of how to build up a force in the world of Infinity.

So you don’t like the starter boxes but you love the models and you’re not too sure where to start from…No worries!
The following is four pointers to consider when picking out models to make up your force:

GET SOME BASIC INFANTRY IN:
These plain and boring as these little dudes maybe they will see you through the thick and thin. They are cheap, might not last long on the board but they make up orders and multiple orders mean prizes when it comes to the crunch kids. (Usually they come in packs of 2 or 3 and that’s really all you’ll need)

REMEMBER: TROOPS MEAN ORDERS AND ORDERS MEAN PRIZES!

BRING THE BIG GUNS:
This is a squad based game so think first fight second. Your force I’d suggest needs at least two supporting weapons. They can cover your troops advance from cover to cover and nail enemy big boys before they become too much of a threat or they can at least keep them at bay whilst your cunning strategy unfolds! (HMG, Mk12’s and Snipers are a good place to start.)

LOVE YOUR SUPPORTERS:
Get some support troops in your force and make sure you remember to use them especially if you’ve got a light trooper based army like the Acontecimento Sectorial or Haqqislam means you can fight for longer and get out of tight jams by reviving those essential equipment or troops to restock the order pool! (Support packs are an awesome addition giving you a Dr and an Engineer/Hacker with remotes so they don’t even have to get in harm’s way!)

And finally…..

GO YOUR OWN WAY:
This is a big thing of mine, and I cannot stress this enough. I don’t like to see people badgered into purchasing ‘must have’ units with the exception of 2 or 3 troopers buy / put in what you want too or enjoy the look of otherwise it will kill the enjoyment of it for you.

As long as you have a Lt and everything fits in the weapons costs / availability do it your own way and have fun!

Hope you enjoyed reading this and it’s helped people make a start...

I'm also quite interested, where can you get the starter sets from?
Cheers

After chatting to a couple of you down at the outpost, having a look at some models in the flesh, and reading stuff around the place (and listening to an episode of "o-12", one of the infinity podcasts), I've bought myself a Nomad Bakunin starter set, a Reverend Custodier, and Prowler, which will hopefully be arriving soon-ish.

I'm well up for some intro games.

Also a question which is at least 2 miles out of my depth at present: what're the special ops folks for? I figured out that they're something to do with a campaign type thing, where they get better over the games.

Anyway, there we go, I'm in now.

Cheers

great to see your excited about the game.
i can give you an intro any time just have to sort out a day but if you can make it for the intro night that would be good to.

about the spec op miniatures they are a special unit used in campaigns were they gain experience which they can spend on skills and weapons plus you can use them as proxies for other minis.
i will be using mine for shavasti shrouded, malignos or noctifers

We are Big into Proxy (to a point, that Coke Can is NOT a TAG!)
Spec ops can be used to represent line troops nicely. They generally come with spare weapons so If you are a dab had at conversion you can put these specialist weapons on your other troops.
